The definiton of Lieu-Dit in Champagne is used to indicate a single parcel, where grapes is grown to produce a specific label of Champagne.
The origin of the word lieu-dit is very old, probably it dates back to the Middle Age, but it was more generic, since it did not refer to vineyards, but to all piece of soil named like that. At the beginning of the 16th century it was adopted by the municipalities and it is now extensively used. The Champagne region has over 84,000 Lieux-Dits.
